7:46 pm - She didn't make it.
At 5:30 Phil went in to feed her. She went into a seizure and died. RIP, little gal.

As we were trying to figure out what to do, I called the animal rescue people one more time. I got a woman we'd already talked to, and she helped a lot. She tells me that when the pups are that small, there's a 50/50 chance of survival - if they're in the care of an expert. She'd talked with experienced rehabers about our little rat after she got off the phone with us and one man said he'd *never* been successful with pups this young.

We took her into the yard and found a nice spot under some beautiful flowers.

9:30 pm - When last we saw our hero...
He was feeding a rat baby with an eyedropper, hunkered down on the floor making squeaky noises. I measured the little bugger, wanting to see if I could find a site that gives sizes for rat and mouse pups. We'd had an Animal Rescue woman tell us she thought our orphan was a vole (field mouse), based on the photos.

Well, based on size she still comes out rat. We couldn't find but one picture of a vole pup, so it's hard to say based on photographic evidence. But by size, she's rat, not mouse. Sadly, I found this out on a site that sells frozen rat and mouse babies as food. Sponsored by "ratsicles.com." We... may have laughed pretty hard when we saw their logo. At any rate, a mouse at the same size would be weaned. Figure there may be some differences due to domestication, but you'd think the domestic pups would be bigger, not smaller.

So.... yeah. Rat.
